Welcome! I’ve always been fascinated by chakras. A chakra in its most basic sense is like a wheel or a disc of rotating energy. They are embedded in the human subtle energy field at strategic points along the central nervous system and act as focal points of consciousness.
They offer an easily accessible way to understand what might otherwise seem a very esoteric and mysterious process. What’s great about them is that they are completely pre-verbal in nature: you don’t have to wade through densely written tomes or engage in years of training to comprehend their workings. You can begin working with them and making use of them almost immediately. I see them as being like the windows into the soul.
The chakra meditation methods I’ll be describing here and in future posts are an amalgamation of several different disciplines I’ve studied, including Kundalini Yoga, transcendental meditation, colour visualisation, and guided meditation.
Kundalini in simplistic terms refers to the coiled life force energy lying at the base of the spine. In chakra meditation, part of the goal is to raise this energy up through the major chakras to ultimately bring the Root and Crown into a synchronised union.
It works in two ways: meditating deeply, and visualising various colours in different parts of the body where the main chakra energy centres are located.
It bypasses the conscious mind and goes directly to the deep nervous system and the unconscious mind, smoothening and eliminating energy imbalances which can build up over time. It is extremely easy to learn but has quite powerful results.
The visualisation and feedback techniques involved can also to an extent replicate the REM phase of sleep, which can help compensate for insomnia. By helping the meditator go within it can put the mind into a restful mild trance which is similar to sleep. I have a testimonial from one person who said she was under tremendous stress looking after her seriously ill husband and had not slept properly for months, until she tried this technique. I have another testimonial from someone else who said the counselling I gave her based on this had helped her to understand her phobias better.
It is also an excellent way to reduce stress and anxiety, as simply visualising the chakras can be enough to bring the mind into a more relaxed state.
It first occurred to me that colour visualisation could be a powerful tool when, one day many years ago, in a bookstore, I found a book about chakras and started reading through the descriptions for each one. Back then, I knew very little on the subject, though I had been meditating on and off for a while. As I read through the descriptions of each of them in turn, beginning with the root and culminating with the crown, I visualised each one in my mind, its colour correspondence and where it was in the body. After I finished and put the book back on the shelf, I noticed to my surprise that, for some reason, I suddenly felt a lot better and more clear-headed than I had when I first came into the bookstore. It was like my overall energy had been boosted slightly. As I left the store, it suddenly hit me: as I read through the book, I had been doing a chakra visualisation exercise without even realising it. In picturing each one and its position in the body, I had unwittingly directed energy to it, boosting its energy slightly. It was after this that I began to study them more in depth.
Much of the information contained here came to me during my meditations as intuitive insights and visions, which I did not come to make sense of until some time later. There is nothing particularly unique about this; if you pursue any meditation system for long enough, eventually visions and insights will start to come to you. You simply ask the Universe for answers. Wherever possible, I’ll supply citations and sources for the assertions I make.
Whereas many view the chakras as being these rather arcane entities, I propose that there is a rational biological basis for them. Part of the raison d’être for this series is to simply describe them as they are – a naturally occurring physical phenomenon that can be studied and utilised the same as any other.

Here we’ll be investigating the scientific basis for the chakras, how they arise from naturally occurring cellular phenomena within the physical body and its overall energetic structure.
We’ll also delve into how your overall physical and psychological health can be greatly helped by having a healthy chakra system. I’ll describe the hazards to your energy system that you should avoid, and some common sense steps you can take to ensure good mental and physical health by keeping your energy system clear.
From there we will branch out to explore other metaphysical themes. We’ll explore to what degree, if any, various New Age concepts have a scientific basis, and whether they can be practically utilised in everyday life. Come join me on this voyage of discovery.
